Webisode #2 – Down Memory Lane

Living in the dorms was… interesting, to say the least. Although I only lived on campus my freshman year, I did end up living in two different dorms and spent enough time in the dorm rooms of some of my pledge brothers to learn one thing: there is always that one Resident Assistant or Resident Director who took living on-campus entirely too seriously.

You know who I’m talking about… They were the ones who had school spirit coming out their asses and who took the idea of communal living to a whole new level. Whether it was door decorating, baby picture bulletin boards or pushing campus-sponsored activities, all I could do was shake my head and laugh.

That being said, I did meet some really great people while living on campus that first year — people that I would end up being friends with long after we shared a cramped living space. On top of that, I walked away with some pretty crazy memories from that fateful year on-campus…

  1. Frostbrew team… I spent my freshman year in Allen Hall at Frostburg a long time ago (77-78). I was not a frat guy but we still carried on aplenty. A few high / low lights… endless Spades card games – any time we could get four guys and a table together. Very competitive, often beer filled. (remember that was pre-internet days – there was one TV in the all of the dorm). A indoor mini – golf tournament with “holes” all over the dorm including the showers (with water turned on for a water “hazard”). Stealing food trays and using them as “sleds” on the hills on the north side of campus. Jumping out of second story windows into the giant snow drifts behind the dorm. Having a wicked hangover on parents visitation day, lying on my freshly made bed, sweating, waiting for them to show up. Then having my dad want to go out for a beer five minutes after they arrived. I’m sure he knew I was a “hurtin’ Bobcat”. I was only 17 the whole first semester. Drinking age was 18. I didn’t want to be the only one left out. We had student ID cards designed like credit cards. My birthday is 12/28, so I shaved the 1 flat and my birthday became 2/28… problem solved.

Hey Chris! Thanks for sharing these great memories! I lived in Allen Hall my first semester before, let’s just say, “electing” to move out and into Sowers for the spring.

I feel like you all had it a little better living in the dorms prior to the internet age… I can remember on warm days walking through campus and all you could hear from the open dorm windows was that classic AOL Instant Messanger chime as people chatted back and forth, lol.
